Everything you need to know during your stay…

Greetings from Hidden River...

It’s a pleasure to have you here, and we sincerely hope that your visit, for whatever reason, is enjoyable.

We’ve put together this short handbook with all the necessary bits and pieces to make sure you get the most out of your stay. From operating the hot tub to taking a run. Everything is arranged for your convenience, making scrolling a breeze.

Where it all began...

A local dairy farmer and his now-business partner once talked about their “ideal holiday destination” over a few drinks in the Cumbrian countryside. After searching for exactly that they realised that nothing quite fit the bill. That’s when Hidden River Cabins finally materialised.

He decided that everyone should see this unexplored serene area of Cumbria, where the cabins are located, in order to diversify and because of the breath-taking beauty around his farm. With assistance from his family and team they extend a warm greeting to visitors from all over the world.

Hidden River offers the perfect place to spend quality time with friends, family, or even just the two of you. Each opulent log cabin on the River Lyne’s banks offers miles of river to fish and explore.

Need to nip out?

It’s often said we are a little ‘in the middle of nowhere’ but the closest shop is just a short 10 minute drive away to the Spar in Longtown.

If you need a full shop then ASDA or M&S Food Hall at Kingstown, Carlisle might be best. This should only take you around 20 minutes

Turn left out of the main site entrance and follow the road signs for M6 Junction 44, or click on each store name above to take you to Maps.

You can also get a home shopping delivery to site but please be sure to add the property name to the notes and pick a time slot where you are in to unpack everything.

However if it is an on-site emergency with the likes of your boiler making funny noises then please call the office on the number below and select extension 1.

Take a dip...

  • Shower first to rinse off any moisturisers, lotions or fake tan.
  • Grab your gown and plastic cups, please keep any glassware away from the hot tub.
  • Unclip the straps and carefully lift the lid off onto the decking, please leave the chlorine ‘mushroom’ floating around as it will help keep the tub clean.
  • Sit back and relax – we recommend 20 minutes of bathing time, if you soak too much longer you may turn into a prune!
  • Please make sure to keep the lid on and strapped in place when not using the hot tub – this keeps the heat in.
  • Please don’t turn off the main switch (it looks like a light switch) as this will turn the hot tub off which will take hours to heat up again.

How to use the wood burner

  • To light the wood burner slightly pull the tray out at the bottom of the fire, this will create a draft.
  • Place in some firelighters along with some paper under dry wood from the log basket.
  • Make sure both prongs on either side are fully pulled out and light the firelighters.
  • It will take around 20 minutes for the fire to start burning on its own.
  • Once the fire is burning well, push the tray back in and keep adding logs and push both prongs half way in. This will create a lot of heat.
  • Just a tip – the fire functions at its best when filled with logs rather than just one or two.
  • Need more logs? There is extra stored undercover beside the cabin, or near to the Hidden River House if you are staying in the courtyard.
  • Please don’t leave the fire unattended and make sure you have the door securely closed at all times during operation.

Power Out?

If the lights go out or if you have problems with the electricity then please locate the main switch box to see if anything has tripped, if so please flick the switch back up, if this doesn’t solve the issue then it might be what you have just plugged in or turned on so please turn it off then try the switch box again. If all else fails then please pop up to reception.

The main switch box is often found in one of a few different locations.
– Under the kitchen countertop in one of the corner cupboards or larder cupboard (cabins)
– On the first floor (behind the painting of the lady in the East Wing, inside the corner cupboard in the West Wing)
– In the built in cupboards in the living space or bedrooms (usually courtyard cottages)

12 Wildlife

We are really proud to be located in such a rural location, surrounded by beautiful views and wildlife.

Because of this we do sometimes have unexpected visitors inside the properties, we ask that if this is an issue to you, that you keep windows and doors closed and lights off as the night draws in, to prevent bats being attracted into the property.

Bats are attracted to insects, which are attracted to lights. Therefore if you would like to minimise bats around the property in the summer months please keep outside lights off to help prevent them from being attracted to the property and mistakenly flying in. If you don’t mind please leave the lights on, bats are amazing to watch!

If this does happen please don’t be alarmed. We have equipped the property with a net for the not so faint hearted to assist in getting them safely back outside!

We please ask that any visitors are released unharmed. Bats are also heavily protected.

Dogs

Dogs are very welcome in the Hidden River Cafe and Barn as well as all of the cabins however our courtyard is a pet free zone. Please ensure that they stay downstairs and off any furniture. We also kindly ask that you maintain general house keeping during your stay and clean up after them.

If you’re planning to go out and need a dog sitter during your stay then let us know and we can see if there is anyone that can help.
